Presentation of the area and population
The project takes place
in Spain, in an area of Almeria, in Andalucia. We live in Vicar, where we are
welcomed by the parish, of which Father Antonio is the priest. Others activities
take place in the area around Vicar and in one of the parishes of Roquetas, the
priest here is Father Manolo. We also go to Almeria to present Taizé and the ´Small
community project´.
This region is a huge
agricultural area, which is one of the most important of Europe. The vegetables
and fruits are mostly exported to Europe.
Agriculture is
a very large source of income here and most of the people work in the plastic
greenhouses. There are so many, that it seems to be a sea, that’s why people
call it here “the plastic sea”.
Many migrants come here by boats. Only after three
years they get their residence papers, the most of them find work in
agriculture.
In Roquetas, the major part of the population come
from sub-Saharan countries.
In Vicar, we live amongst gypsy families and
immigrants from north-Africa.
